south river in edgewater, maryland. bob barnard is there tonight with the story. >> reporter: the plane is still out there on the bottom of the river. the pilot was the only one on board. he was rescued and seems to be doing okay. this is pilot richard drier alive and doing well despite crashing his small plane into south river around 3:00 this afternoon. >> i'm doing final. >> reporter: maryland state police say his plane experienced engine trouble shortly after teeing off from nearby lee airport southwest of annapolis. >> out of the left corner of my eye, i saw the plane about 50 feet off the water going pretty slowly and at first i thought it was just somebody horsing around, flying low intentionally. and then i saw that the engine was sputtering. i heard it was sputtering. >> reporter: from sky fox you can see part of the plane just beneath the surfac. we're told it's a vintage aircraft from the 1940's that had just been restored. it came to rest just west of the route 2 bridge over south

river. >> if he would have went 50 hor feet or 30 more feet to the left or right, wee have hit a concrete wall. god bless that gentleman. >> reporter: this couple was at a nearby arena when they were told about the crash. they hopped into a dingy and raced out. >> you couldn't see the plane. we noticed the guy. just his head was sticking out of the water. so we rode over to him and made sure he was the only one there and he wasn't injured. we ended up pulling him up on the boat. >> reporter: drier who is 76 refused medical treatment. a dive team helped to mark where the plane rests. state police told us it took mr. drier three hours to reach his wife to let her know what happened and that he is okay. >> it's the south river's owe oat miracle on the south river. >> reporter: maryland state

police investigators say the pilot was headed to bay bridge airport. they'll try to figure out exactly why his plane went down. in edgewater, inned mid, bob barnard, fox 5 news. we're following a developing story on capitol hill right now. the house ending the health care battle. members just voted 220-207 to pass the final fixes for the health care overhaul. the senate approved the bill earlier today. it now heads to president obama's desk for signature. he spent the day on the road pumping up the overhaul and calling out those who didn't vote yes. >> i'm not exaggerating. leaders of the republican party, they called the passage of this bill armageddon. armageddon. end of freedom as we know it. so after i signed the bill i looked around to see if there were any asteroids falling. >> repealing the bill will not

be easy. republicans would ne a two- thirds majority to repeal. but in the aftermath of all the political fighting over the bill, several members of congress have received frightening threats. it is all part of the backlash after the health care votes. several democrats and virginia republican eric cantor have either been targeted by threats or sometimes vandalism. we have more on the investigation and finger pointing. >> reporter: the political finger pointing over threats and vandalism towards congressmen took a new turn thursday. >> it is not a partisan issue. >> reporter: virginia republican congressman eric cantor says his richmond campaign office was shot at this week but accused democratic chairman tim kaine and maryland congressman advice van hollen for exploiting incidents against democrats for political gain. >> i have deep concerns that some, triple chairman chris van hollen and dnc chairman tim

kaine in particular are dangerously fanning the flames by suggesting that these incidents be used as a political weapon. >> reporter: in response to congressman cantor, van hollen's office issue add statement today saying, quote "he chose to use his press conference to levy false accusations." virginia democratic congressman tom periella -- [ indiscernible ] he is the g.o.p. -- says the g.o.p. needs to do more to reign in some of its supporters. >> it's been very disappointing that we've given the republican leaders in d.c. multiple days to have a chance to do this in a bipartisan basis. we really had to pull them into condemning this behavior. >> reporter: at the capitol

itself thursday a stepped up police defense was visible. terence gainer says capital police, the f.b.i. and the secret service are tracking any and all threats. >> we are sharing intelligence and working together. >> reporter: tom jits fitzgerald, fox 5 news. the temperatures have taken a tumble outside tonight. that is not all. the wind is whipping up as well. let's check in with sue palka in the weather center tonight. it is starting to get a little chilly out there. >> it's going to abfew more hours before we see the temperature drop. we're still 65 degrees but that's down from 74 earlier today. it looks like a 25-degree temperature drop for us tomorrow. daytime highs may only be in the 40s for a lot of you. we are starting to see some light rain. probably most of you are talking about the rain we've been getting. these are gusty showers. don't be surprised if you get a gust to 40 mileper hour. you can see on radar the stuff

that we're getting right now is pretty light but a wider view on trueview will show you we still have a number of hours of showers to get through and as we look at bigger picture here, it's an area of low pressure that's coming from kentucky and that is going to kind of increase the intensity of the rain showers and certainly more widespread coverage. check out the snow. do you see that? up across the great lakes. wouldn't be shocked if there were some wet snow flakes around tomorrow afternoon mixed in with the rain but the bum be of this will be -- bulk of this will be over by noon. let's take a look at wind gusts. we're down a little bit. check this out. the top of the hour i think reagan is down now to 37. actually even 25 in a few spots. so that is at least an improvement. don't be surprised as mention if we do get some gusts over 40. that even includes during the y tomorrow. a look at your headlines so you know what to expect. we're going to see rain into about friday midday and more sporadic by afternoon. but the big deal will be the big drop in those temperatures. it will be blustery.

developments. >> reporter: this is not a done deal yet but it is getting closer. according to multiple sources, washington capitals owner ted leonnis and the estate of abe poland have reached an agreement on a price for him to purchase the wises discards -- wizards and the verizon center roughly $50 million. the deal has not been finalized because of nonessential issues. if the deal is done, it would make leonnis one of the most pour with in business and sports in washington. the nba, the f.b.i. and nhl -- the nba and the nhl. the total is pegged around $550 million. the agreement must receive approval by three-quarters majority of the nba's 30 owners. the agreement in principle follows three months of

negotiations between leonnis' closely held investment group and the estate of poland who died late november at the age of 85. will, we could have a complete deal maybe in two week. >> stay tuned for the details from you, thank you. staying on the wizards now, gilbert arenas will be sentenced on his felony gun charge tomorrow. prosecutors say his lack of remorse and guilty plea is enough to put him behind bars for three months, but the judge has the latitude to sentence him up to five years. arenas admitted bringing four guns to the verizon locker room back in december after a heated argument with teammate javaris crittendon. a virginia chiropractor who claims to work with the washington capitals and was arrested in a steroid sting is out of jail. a judge released douglas nagel n $40,000 bond. florida police say he illegally received steroids from a man who already pled guilty to criminal charges. that man seen here also claimed

a new crime wave hitting one local county. thieves are targeting wheels leaving cars stranded. it's been happening in charles county over the last few weeks. wisdom martin reports it doesn't take these thieves long to to steal your wheels. >> reporter: after a long

winner dean decided to take his 2006 cadillac out of the garage. >> my wife spent two hours cleaning it up. >> reporter: with the car clean and shiny, they left it parked in the driveway. since they live in the rural suburbs on a dead end street, they didn't think ything else about it until they woke up the next day. >> saturday morning actually my on-in-law came out first. he came and got me. weame out and there it was. >> reporter: the cadillac was there but it was sitting on blocks. all four wheels were gone. >> it was a big surprise. i would never have expected something like that. >> reporter: investigators in charles county say wheel theft has been an ongoing problem in recent weeks. they say suspects are driving through neighborhood, jumping out and stealing wheels. >> my understanding it only takes like ten minutes, is 15 minutes to do that. they have a crew. you figure two or three of them, they swoop in here. it's like a pit crew. >> reporter: it's not just

here. investigators have made contact with other agencies in the region and they have had the same problems with suspects stealing wheels. >> it's not so much the wheels. it makes me mad but it's the hassle you've got to go through, the ag vision. >> reporter: the charles -- aggravation. >> reporter: the charles county department says they are stepping up patrols. dean says he's going to reevaluate the security at his house. >> what we're going to do now, we made a decision. we're going to put a big motion light up there and maybe a camera. all depends if we can afford that or not. >> reporter: reporting in charles county, wisdom martin, fox 5 news. take a good look at these men. they may have stolen an suv this morning in the district with a 1-year-old still inside. d.c. police released these pictures hoping you might recognize them and this is the suv police say they may have stolen. a mother left her car running with the baby inside near north capital and p street northwest.

she ran back inside her house to grab something. >> she heard squealed tires. turned around to see her car driving off with her infant son in it. >> police found the car with the little boy safe inside a few blocks away. he was taken to the hospital as a precaution but is expected to be okay. investigators are still looking for the suspects. only on fox 5, new details about an inmate's escape in southeast two weeks ago. investigators are now looking at the possibility that suspect had help from the inside. and we've learned terence moore, the name of the suspect, had a handcuffed key and a cell phone when he was recaptured by d.c. police only 12 hours after getting away. fox 5's paul wagner has our exclusive. >> reporter: law enforcement sources say when terence moore was found sleeping in a car not far from where he was last seen, he wasn't giving up without a fight. sources say he tried to grab an officer's gun and in the

struggle was injured. after being transported to howard university hospital, officers began searching moore for a key. as they looked in moore's mouth, he swallowed it, a simple x-ray confirmed it was lodged in his windpipe. law enforcement sources say when moore was recaptured, he was dressed n civilian clothes and was in possession of a cell phone. investigators believe he may have had some help on the outside with those items but the key is another matter entirely. >> in this casit sounds like there was some inside work -- inside connections which of course those folks should be fired. and but it needs to be investigated and figured out where the weaknesses are in the system that this could have happened. >> reporter: terence moore was being held in the correctional treatment facility, basically an annex at the d.c. jail. it's considered a medium to minimum security facility run by the corrects corporation of america.

the u.s. attorney's office says moore was there because he ha agreed to cooperate in a drug case. then backed out. but even moore's mother knew he was a flight risk. >> i know terence. i know t.j. at any given chance, i know he's going to run. this is his make yum all his -- makeup all his life. >> reporter: d.c. police have had numerous run-ins with terence moore. last may he got into a gun battle with police and was shot. the day he escaped police say moore was headed for treatment for one of those gunshot wounds. as the corrections officers pulled the van into the parking lot of what used to be known as greater southeast hospital, moore jumped out and ran away. a spokesman for the corrects corps of america says the investigation is ongoing and so far no one has been fired or disciplined. investigators are still trying to track the cell phone to see where it may have come from. one other note. n inmates at the ctf are allowed what's called contact visits. there's no glass in between the visitors and they're allowed to hug them as they come and go.

the catholic church is being rocked again bisexual allegations n. time it's a wisconsin priest accused of molesting more than a hundred boys. and tonight direct ties to the pope are being revealed. we take a closer look at the new allegations reaching all the way to vatican city. >> reporter: the church officials here-- >> the church officials including the pope have been more concerned with protecting the privacy and the reputation of child predator priests rather than the innocent children. >> reporter: accusations from a group of alleged survivors. they claim the vatican didn't properly discipline a priest in wisconsin. they say reference lawrence murphy accused of molesting about 200 deaf boys from 1950's

through the mid-'70s was given a mere slap on the wrist. according to "the new york times," two wisconsin businessships urge -- bishops urged the vatican to conduct an investigation but they did not follow through with that reportedly saying too much time had passed since the alleged abuse. murphy was instead ordered to repent and not celebrate mass outside of his diocese. he died in 1998. the pope urged catholics not to judge sinners. >> dear friends let us learn from our lord jesus christ not to judge and not to put the blame on other people. >> reporter: but alleged victims say blame is exactly what's needed. >> the pope knew about this. he was the one who handled the sex abuse cases. so i think he should be accountable because he did nothing. >> reporter: the vatican newspaper said today the allegations are part of a smear

itself gap between the reach and poor in the district is getting wider. nearly one out of five d.c. residents lives below the poverty line. looking at the numbers it's like a tale of two cities. the overall poverty rate in 2009 was 18.9%. the gap between blacks and whites is even wider. fox 5's roby chavez has more on how this affes families.

>> reporter: will, it's a failing grade and everyone is asking how could this happen in the nation's capital. the city has been hit hard by unemployment. there's a ten-year wait for affordable housing and near 114,000 people need help just to eat. it is an alarming and sad statistic in the nation's capital, nearly one in five people live below the poverty level, the worst increase in 15 years. >> a lot of people are struggling to meet their basic needs. we know that the district has a wait list for affordable housing of 26,000 households. it's hard to know exactly how people are surviving. >> reporter: new numbers released by the d.c. fiscal policy institute show a tale of two cities. the haves and have notes. look at the numbers. the median income for whites is $101,000 a year while the median income for blacks is

only $39,000 a year. many are missing out on those high end jobs. >> they could be in jobs where they're earning a low wage and there's no way to move up. so we need to make investments in areas like job training to help people get the skills they need to take advantage of the high quality jobs the district has. >> reporter: it's a tough life, especially for kids. one in three are living in poverty with families earning less than $22,000 a year. >> if you have a minimum wage job, you have to work three full-time jobs130 hours a week, to afford a two-bedroom apartment and be able to buy food in this city even our working families aren't able to make enough money. >> reporter: and for some that means families are being split apart. >> we represent three little boys. they're 5, 4 and 1 and a half in foster care. everyone, the judge and the social worker, we all agree they should go back to their mom and dad but because of the

recession, they're unemployed and they don't have any place to live. just because they're poor, this family has been split up. >> reporter: the recession is to blame but 40 social justice organizations are gearing up to put pressure on city leaders for the failing grade on poverty. >> i think it can be because we haven't held our elected officials accountable. so to defeat poverty in d.c. is about saying to the mayor and to members of the council and the folks who are running against them, you need to solve this problem and we're going to vote based on how you respond. >> reporter: officials with fight poverty d.c. say it is some of the worst numbers in the nation and it won't get any bernie time soon with a $500 million shortfall in the city, many social service agencies that help the poor have already been drastically cut. >> roby chavez, thank you. metro wants to know exactly how well it responds in an emergency. it's planning a drill sunday morning. the scenario? an explosion on a train. the drill will run from 1:00 to 4:00 sunday morning at the rosslyn station. if you're in that area, don't be alarmed by all of the

emergency vehicles and personnel. blue line and orange line riders could run into delays of up to 30 minutes. metro's outgoing general manager john catoe is getting a big thank you from the transit agency's board despite a very difficult year. fox 5's john henrehan has the story. >> reporter: it was a sad irony that shortly after john catoe was named transit manager of the year by the american public transit association, metro suffered its worst ever rail accident in which nine people died and dozens more were injured. a series of subsequent accidents has put metro's safety record under the microscope. at his last board meeting john catoe reiterated why he decided on his own why to leave the transit agency's top job. >> i think and i believe that the authority needs to take a different direction and that it is best that someone else leads that change. >> reporter: catoe and his current management team are trying to talk the board into committing to a rail car

purchase plan in which cause saki would build state of the art subway cars for metro's expansion to duls airport and to replace all 300 of the original metro cars which tend to crump pal in crashes. >> we'll be getting away from aluminum cars to stainless steel cars which are far more doable. >> reporter: board members who gave john catoe two standing ovations praised the general manager's performance when the transit agency provided 1.7 million rides on inauguration day and when it needed leadership at the accident sites. >> even when things do happen to go wrong, you're on the scene and you're a standup guy. >> seeing you there at that location taking command, providing guidance, providing aseniors gave me a sense of calm and i think gave this region a sense of calm. >> reporter: john catoe will be a transit consultant in the future. he's actually on metro's

a high speed chase caught on camera in texas. the driver? a 12-year-old. investigators found a gun and marijuana inside the car. the 14-mile chase at speeds topping 100 miles an hour. the kid was weaving in and out of traffic. it's kind of hard to see him there because he didn't have any headlights o. deputies used spike strips to finally end the chase. by the time they got to the driver, he was holding a cell phone. >> what are you doing? >> trying to call my poll. >> trying to call your mom. are you crazy, boy? >> a heightened emergency. you don't know who's in the vehicle. and until, you know, it was a shock. >> the deputies believe the boy took the car from his parents without their knowledge. a big cash grab in ohio. more than $100,000 still missing after a bag of cash fell off an armored car in an intersection. several people rushed on to the road and grabbed handfuls of

money. 911 callers reported money floating all over the place. anyone who doesn't give the money back could be charged with tht. they're off. nearly a dozen horses escape from a southern california ranch and took off down the road. police used cars to divert them away from traffic and a border patrol helicopter swooped down to help corral the wild stallions. eventually one ever the horses was has sued and the -- was la sued -- lassoed and taken to the ranch. this is on the west side highway. they caught the coyote. it was the fourth sighting this year. three were spotted last month at columbia university. new york really a concrete jungle, right? we are counting down to the peak bloom of our cherry blossoms -- nobody in here liked that one -- we've got

experience. >> reporter: she's talking about soaking up the beauty of the blossoms during guided walks at night. don't forget to bring a flashlight. >> i'm the voice for paddles. >> reporter: they get a little hokey when they promote the festival. real beavers were relocated a few years back for chewing on the cherry trees and the mascot is here for crowd control. >> paddles stayed with us so he can help teach our visitors that we want to protect our trees. we don't want to climb in them. we don't want to pick the blossoms. >> reporter: they're expecting a million visitors for the blossom festival. some tourists are enjoying the trees already. >> they're going to be really pretty next week. wish we could be here for it. >> reporter: this guy came all the way from japan to take some pictures. >> we're thrilled to have you here. did you come all the way just to see the cherry blossoms? >> yes. >> reporter: meanwhile visitors are encouraged to take metro or ride their bikes. >> it there will be bicycle valets. we work in partnership with the

down there. but i think i need to turn the heat on. >> i think you will be surprised how much you're going to want it tomorrow and tomorrow night. >> you've been talking about the changes and just in time for the festival unfortunately. >> they won't be harming the cherry blossoms and it probably won't get that cold. the water protects the trees so it doesn't get as cold in the district but we could see some 20s tomorrow night. isn't that shocking? it really is. now, tonight what we're getting is kind of gusty winds. a slow drop off in the temperatures. it's still in the 60s. that's fantastic. we do have this light rain that's all around the area. that will increase so you can see the visibility going downhill. occasionally could get gusts up to 40 miles an hour and even during the day tomorrow. let's check out radar so you can see what we're talking about. this has been pretty light stuff. one wave going by. there will be a break for a little while and then we'll get more rain and it will be steadier and heavier as we get closer to the morning rush

hour. plan extra time. you know how that drill goes. friday morning is tough enough even with it dry out there. most of this holding off till just a couple of hours ago. one wave coming on through but we'll haveo wait for the main driver of this entire thing to come on through. it's an area of low pressure back through kentucky. you can see the snow here. there's a small amount. snow they're getting on the back edge of it. that back edge could be close enough tomorrow to give us a little bit of snow mixed in with our rain showers as this thing is winding down tomorrow afternoon. so we've got a cold front that will be coming on through. a big drop in temperatures behind it. winds have been gusting this evening as mentioned. they're down to 25 now at reagan national. 32 at annapolis. 37 at dulles. this is how it's going to go se flags will definitely be flapping but at least it's not that cold yet although the temperature drop will be coming.

so our high temperatures tomorrow will likely be in the morning and probably the overnight temperatures that we see. the rain will be around until friday midday and then it will be lighter but still probably some showers, especially east of d.c. blustery throughout the day, especially the afternoon. falling temperatures. we will see those highs probably whatever our overnight low is which is probably going to be pretty high and then dropping even into the 4s during the day tomorrow. talk about the 20s tomorrow night. that's mainly in the suburbs. i don't think the city will get there. the cherry blossoms should be fine but if you've been doing some early planting you what to do what you can to protect them or bring the plants in if you haven't put them in the ground yet. and maybe the next round of rain getting in here sunday. saturday will be dry for the kite festival but not as windy as tomorrow. but they'll be able to fly those kites down there at the mall. tomorrow 50 degrees. that's being generous because it will feel in the 40s. the high temperature will be early in the day.

53 on saturday so definitely on the cool side and certainly below average. sunday 56 degrees with more showers coming in. they will linger into the first part of monday where our temperatures should be 61 degrees. so nice today though, wasn't it? even with the clouds we still got up to 74 degrees. so that is pretty amazing. now, a quick look at temperatures around the region now. we've been dropping off. down to 61 degrees now. gaithersburg 65. still comfortable for this time of night. showers develop. steadier rain overnight. 48 degrees our overnight low close to daughter-in-law -- to dawn. tomorrow showers, blustery winds. by noon only 40. we'll call it wet and windy and maybe it's drier with some sunshine for the evening rsh hour. but our temperature only 43 degrees. here's a look at weekend. we have the five-day forecast. and you can see we're talking about a cooler weekend. now, cherry blossom festival starts next week. the blossoms will be out. i think the weather will be much better next week. i bet we even climb into the
